London Airport & Boarding for Nairobi
So, I arrived in London around 7 AM (1 AM home time) and it just hit me how exhausted I am. As we were landing, I was trying to sleep between games of sudoku on the fancy television screen I was talking about earlier. Joey texted me and I was like hey, good morning! And he's like dude, it's 2 AM, good night.. Better get used to that time change! 😳Breakfast food on the plane was good. It came in this cute Bristish inspired pasty box with a very good croissant, strawberry jelly, an almond berry bar and raisins. I got more hot tea :)London's airport is insane, FYI. It's huge and confusing! I got off and everyone was speaking with heavy (but wonderful) British accents and I didn't know what to do.. Luckily one of the flight attendants gave me a general idea of where to go and I was able to follow the correct signs. If only I had time to really explore London, I bet it's an incredible city.I went on the transit (there's probably some London word for that..) to get to Terminal 3 and it was much longer than I expected! And scary. They drive on the other side of the road from us Americans and I was very confused at first. Good thing I wasn't driving! It's a very intricate system though, and while I thought we were about to get in an accident a few times, the drivers and system all operated very smoothly. I found security and sat in the "departure lounge" awaiting the gate number to be released for my upcoming flight. (I assure you I was not as cool and collected as this post makes me sound, but I figured it all out otherwise I wouldn't be blogging and I'd still be talking to Lisa..). Rico and I found each other and talked about our challenges thus far and how we actually cannot believe that two months are going to spent so far away from home.I went to the currency exchange staff and got some Kenyan shillings... $50 USD was worth almost $4,200 in Kenyan currency. Talk about feeling "rich"!I'm sitting on the plane waiting to depart for Nairobi on my second 9 hour flight. I really should've went to the bathroom before I got on this plane, but oh well. It was get off, sit down, board again...not much time in between! This plane is a lot less nicer than the first one to London, but everyone looks like they're on a mission. Whether it be business, or traveling home, or mission work, it appears as though everyone has a very specific reason for going to Kenya and perhaps this will be my chance to truly figure out my purpose for going to this beautiful country. This is a pretty full flight, to my surprise, and Rico and I are only a few rows apart. One thing I've noticed too, just while I'm bored and waiting for this plane to take off, is how kind people are around the world! Maybe I look like a lost teenager (not ready to embrace adulthood...yikes!), but in Chicago there was a nice older man who talked to me about his cruise that his family is going on and he was very curious about my internship. I met a girl older than me and an older man who were going to Hong Kong for (something important?) and they thought my internship sounded so cool and were impressed. I met another girl here in London who is going to Paris and she was just as lost and confused as I was...it was nice to have someone feeling the same way. A man sitting next to me visits Nairobi often and was curious about my purpose for traveling there. People loved talking to me and I loved hearing their stories and reasons for traveling! We're getting ready for take off for Nairobi. See ya!
