I'm All Over the Road
That song by Easton Corbin about being all over the road...a little bit of left and a little bit of right...accurately describes my travels in the backseat. My brothers would like it here because:
- There aren't really any speed limits. I'm sure they're posted somewhere, but no one adheres to them. Plus I've seen a total of 2 cops the entire time! (Update - the speeds vary depending on your car. Weird, right? So it's listed on the back by your license but, again, no one really abides by it)
- There are speed bumps every few kilometers. I dislike them, but I feel Hunter and Harley would try to jump them every time. (NOT in my Jeep, of course)
- Motorcycles and bikes are the preferred mode of transportation. Everyone seems to ride them.
- People honk their horns, just to say hello or to warn the bikers that they're coming up behind. It's only a rude honk if someone is all over the road..hence the title.
- Did I mention that you can pass whenever and however you want? Bikes tend to pass on the left and cars on the right. But there's no rules. If a car is going slow, you pass them. You have somewhere to be? You go faster. Bikes on the "shoulders"? You drive in the middle of the road. The yellow line might as well not exist because as I'm typing this, we are smack in the center of the road. (No worries, mom and dad, no cars are coming). Pass on a hill, pass on a corner...you do you.
- There's no road signs. Okay, there's some. But usually, they introduce a bigger city or county or some tourist destination, but otherwise there is noting to tell you where to go. Drive the wide open space, folks.
- Goats, chickens, cows, and donkeys run alongside, and sometimes on, the road. There are several goats and cows that are tied to something (haven't figured that it yet??) near the side of the road where they can graze without fear of getting hit alongside the edge of their owner's farm.
- Also, to clarify, they drive on different sides of the road than us. It's weird, but I kind of like it. And the bikers go with traffic, not against it.
It's very difficult to sleep while we're driving (I'm not sure how Isaac does it). I used to text people on the rides, but I ran out of time on my phone...and don't really see the need to get more. I will eventually! I've been working on my questionnaire results, drafting blog posts, or looking through my pictures on the road. And trying to sleep.
