Nairobi Living Arrangements
As I say goodbye to Nairobi this morning, I wanted to be sure and share photos of my living arrangements for the last few days with you all. [wpvideo iuJwjkKG]I stayed at the Guest Centre in the OPEC House. My room is the top right one. It's a very nice place and I had a keyed room with a little patio (I never opened it though..I didn't want bugs in my room!). I included a little video tour of the outside surroundings. The key was confusing at first, but it made me feel much safer knowing I could lock the door and that it wasn't easy to lose the huge wooden key. Over my bed, there is a mosquito net to prevent mosquitos from getting in as the chances for malaria (a diseases spread by mosquitos) are high around here. It looks like the little canopy I had over my bed as a little girl and I feel like a queen with it on, so it works with me! The bed wasn't the best, but I know it could be a lot worse. I was able to sleep peacefully most nights and that's what matters. My room is also equipped with a television, shelving, a mini refrigerator, couch, desk, chair, and personal bathroom. I only used the bathroom of those; my outlets stopped working the first day here and I didn't want to risk burning the lights out also. I'd say it reminds me of a cheap college dorm, but it was very very nice for somewhere in Africa! As a precaution, we drink only bottled water (or steaming hot water as the case with tea!) and brush our teeth with the bottled water as well. The toilets are a lot like American toilets, and yes, there was toilet paper. One of the best perks of living here was that they have a maid come empty your trash, restock your towels, and tie the net back up each evening. Apparently they have similar services in Mmbita, which is nice because it is one less thing for me to worry about. That net is tricky business!I had to take all of my stuff out of my big suitcase for the repair shop, so I put it in the cabinets!I didn't get many pictures, but I'll be sure to get them in Mbita. And now I am off to the Nairobi airport to catch a flight to Kisumu, Kenya, and then to ride in a car for a few hours to Mbita Point, Kenya near Lake Victoria where I will be completing the duration of my internship.
